If brushing keeps getting put off, it may be less about the brushing than about what is left behind — hair on the rug, hair on you, and a tool that needs picking clean before it goes back in a drawer. A small fixed setup can take care of most of that.
Pick the spot before you pick the tools
Choose somewhere with a hard floor, decent light and a bin within arm's reach. A hallway, a bathroom, a patch of kitchen floor. Hard flooring matters more than space: loose hair sweeps off tile and wipes off vinyl, while a rug holds on to it.
Keep five things there, and only five
- The brush or comb you actually reach for.
- A small bin, or a bag clipped to the door handle.
- A lint roller or a damp cloth for your own clothes.
- An old towel to sit on, or to wipe paws with.
- Whatever your pet associates with sitting still.
Clean up in one direction
Work tool, then floor, then you. Clear the hair off the tool while you are still standing over the bin — not later, and not in another room. Sweep or wipe the floor next. Do your clothes last, or you will do them twice.
Put the tool away dry, facing up
If the head got damp from a wipe-down or a wet coat, let it dry before it goes back in a drawer, and store it bristle-side up so the pins are not pressed flat against anything.
Reset once a week
Empty the bin, run out the lint-roller sheets, shake out the towel. A station is easier to keep using when the bin is not already full.
About our pink grooming comb
Everything above works with any brush you already own. Here is what our supplier states about the one we sell.
Our Self-Cleaning Pet Grooming Comb — Pink is US$19.95. It has a push-button bristle mechanism designed to help release collected hair after brushing. Supplier-listed materials are ABS, PP, TPE and stainless-steel needles. One comb is included.
Suitability varies with coat type, and we have not tested it ourselves. Brush gently, avoid sensitive or irritated areas, and stop if your pet is uncomfortable. Anything clinical belongs with your own veterinary practice.
